City of Perry Officials

The community of Perry was incorporated as a village in 1893. In 1964, citizens voted to adopt a City Charter and create the City of Perry. On September 8, 1964, City of Perry residents elected their first City government.

The City of Perry is a Home Rule City governed by a 6-Member Council and Mayor. Election of all City officers is on a non-partisan basis. 

Perry City Council meetings are held at 7 p.m. the first and third Thursday of each month, unless otherwise posted. Council Chambers are located in the lower level of Perry City Hall, 203 W. Polly Street. Enter on the east side of the building. All meetings are held in accordance with the Open Meetings Act.

Sue’s family has been a part of the Perry community for three generations. She was born in the local doctor’s office and grew up in the Perry community graduating from Perry High School in 1969.

She has been involved in music and played the piano her enitre life. Sue has played for various churches, civic and private events, accompanied band students and school choirs and sang with, then directed the community choir. She currently is the pianist/music director at the Shaftsburg United Methodist Church.

Sue has worked in the medical field for 30 years as a medical assistant, x-ray tech, orthopedic tech, and later as a medical transcriptionist.

She became a licensed Realtor in 1991 then in 1993 a real estate associate broker. She no longer has a real estate license.  

Sue served on the Perry Township DDA for about 20 years. She was elected to a Perry Township Trustee position and served that full term. She started the recycling program and served on that committee which was a joint venture with Perry Township, the City of Perry and Village of Morrice.

She and her husband Ron have been married 51 years and have a son and daughter-in-law and a daughter and son-in-law, and five grandchildren.

The Mayor Pro-Tem is appointed every two years by the incoming Mayor.

Larry and his wife of 47 years, Linda, have been residents of Perry for over 20 years. He earned a Bachelor of Engineering degree from General Motors Institute/Kettering.

Larry held a variety of quality engineering and middle management positions during his 35-year GM career in Lansing and Pontiac.

After retiring from GM in 2005, he established and managed a
successful self-employed handyman business, which he operated for 11-years.

In his spare time, Larry enjoys Shotgun Trap Shooting and Shotshell Reloading; Home and Yard Maintenance; Whitetail Deer Hunting; and supporting his wife’s (Linda) Craft Show activities.

Larry was appointed to the City of Perry Planning Commission in January 2020 (No other prior political experience).

“Now that I’ve retired twice,” said Larry, “I’d like to use my career’s experiences and talents to help ensure that the voice of the residents of Perry are heard in city government.

Council Member Bob Porter

Bob Porter has lived in the city since 2016 in a historic house designed by the well-known Lansing architect Edwyn Bowd. He and his wife, Jennifer, have been married since 1986 and they raised three children together.

He graduated from Birmingham Groves High School in 1981.

Bob is a custom residential landscape project manager for Great Oaks Landscape in Novi.

His grandfather and father were landscapers and Bob began working for his father during the summer when he was just 12.

As a boy, he loved to ride around in the truck with his dad while he plowed snow all night.  As long as Bob still went to school, his mother let him.

In the winter, he manages commercial snowplowing contracts for his employer.

Bob enjoys fishing, hunting, gardening, working on his house, watching the Detroit Lions and the Tigers, and having all of his children and their partners over on special occasions and holidays.

Before his election to city council, Bob served on the Planning Commission. He is excited about working hard for the residents of the City of Perry.

Council Member Kristin Babel

Kristin Babel was born and raised in Detroit, then relocated to Oakland County where she graduated from Walled Lake Central HS in 1984. In 1986 she helped her husband create and run a successful wallpaper hanging company until his death in 2000. At that time, Kristin found herself a single mother of two.   In 2004 Kristin became a licensed EMT, and was proud to have served the citizens of Detroit and metro Detroit for 18 years. Now with children grown, she has relocated to Perry and is looking forward to working for the citizens of Perry.

Dr. Ghazi is a mental health professional and a faculty member at Jackson College in the Department of Psychology. He holds a Doctorate in Behavioral Health from Arizona State University, a Master’s in Healthcare Administration from the University of Phoenix, and a Master’s in Social Work from the University of Michigan.  Dr. Ghazi’s journey to Perry is a testament to his belief that “things happen for a reason.” Two years ago, he came to purchase a chair from his landlord, while planning to move to Lansing the very next day. However, events unfolded miraculously, paving the way for his family to settle in Perry instead.

Since then, Dr. Ghazi and his family have embraced everything about Perry and are deeply grateful to call it home. Dr. Ghazi is deeply honored to serve the Perry community as a City Council Member. He is excited to contribute his experience and passion for public service, aiming to foster resilience, connection, and growth in the community that he and his family have come to cherish.
